Controversial. Brash. In Your Face. ….Die Antwoord’s been at this a while and has been polarizing music fans since they started. After even more controversy they had a self induced or press induced hiatus from touring – well some new music and pent up demand sees them hit the US for 10 big dates, with most of the shows sold out.
Monday night (October 28th was the original show and concert review) at Chicago’s House of Blues brought a fiery, defiant performance from the South African Electro Hip-Hop duo/trio …gotta count the DJ, even though you only seem to hear him speak on secretly recorded videos. With Ninja exclaiming “You can try and cancel us but you can’t cancel our fans” (met with uproarious cheers) he went on to quickly get down to his skivvies, per usual, and not stop moving while delivering a breakneck rhymes through classics from ‘Fatty Boom Boom’ and ‘Enter the Ninja’ into new material such as ‘Die Antwoord is (not) Dead’ and ‘Pokemon’. Not to be lost is the stage presence of the enigmatic human doll that is Yolandi. Staring, dancing, leading the crowd with a castrato level soprano+ voice, Yolandi controlled the crowd with every action- reaching peak level on ‘I Fink Ur Freaky’.
Is Die Antwoord for everyone ? Hell no, and they don’t want to be, but the crowd at HOB on Monday was all in with them and mutual love from the stage to the crowd was electric.
(Note: Die Antwoord declined any band photos we shot for this review)
