One of the after-show highlights of recent years, Two Door Cinema Club previewed their stellar Lolla set on Sunday with a Metro show on Saturday that was sold out to the rafters.
Two Door’s style has always played at the fringes of genre—danceable and almost frantic at times, bordering on punk rhythms, but always firmly rooted in melody and the unique underpinnings of vocalist/guitarist Alex Trimble, who, throughout the band’s discography, has found ways to weave intricate lyrical patterns into the band’s arrangements. That the style translates to the live setting so well is a testament to how tight the Two Door’s touring lineup really is. In addition to Trimble and regular bandmates Kevin Baird (bass/synth) and Sam Halliday (lead guitar), drummer Ben Thompson is one of the tightest drummers out there, and his bombastic precision gave the band’s performances of tracks like the jumpy “Do You Want It All” and “Wonderful Life,” while “Next Year” and “Sleep Alone” had the crowd singing along like the band’s Lolla set had already arrived, new single “Happy Customers” drew rapturous energy from the whole of the Metro.
