Back on tour in support of their 2022 release Take Back Your Life, Chicago’s own Disturbed arrived at Tinley Park this week to encourage everyone to do just that—while delivering one of the most electrifying rock shows of the entire year thus far.
No strangers to crushing, anthemic tunes focused on personal reflection, betterment, and the state of the world, the quartet raised the bar from the second they hit the stage to new album opener “Hey You,” and to call the capacity crowd at Credit Union 1 Amphitheater rabid would be an understatement. Much is often said about how an audience can amplify an already great show—to a point of almost being a cliché—but in this case, it was legitimate, and the band knew it. Vocalist David Draiman remains one of the most intense and engaged frontmen in the rock world, and pummeling performances of “Stupify,” “Ten Thousand Fists” (literally!), and “Prayer” went by like a shot. Pausing to collect himself after an emotional performance of “A Reason to Fight” (itself preceded by a PSA on addiction and depression), Draiman engaged the audience for some introspection, discussing his own battles and how the promise of the being on tour brought him back from the brink of self-destruction earlier this year.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he said as the band returned to the stage, “you are officially attending the world’s largest group therapy session,” before launching into “The Vengeful One” from 2015’s Immortalized. And while the band was already in peak form, Draiman’s arena-sized therapy session also played host to the most over-the-top display of pyrotechnics I’ve seen in forty years of concerts: rotating light rigs over the band that blazed with flame for nearly the entire show, capping an already unforgettable set from one of Chicago’s finest outfits.
Pennsylvania quintet Breaking Benjamin warmed up the crowd with a solid, hit-packed selection of tunes, and Ukrainian metal core outfit Jinjer opened the day’s ceremonies with a savage, all-too-brief set highlighting Tetiana Shmailyuk’s wicked vocal style—the band’s profile is rising, and if their half-hour set was anything to go on, we’ll see them moving up the bill in short order.
