A Teens Perspective.
Korean pop group Stray Kids played a sold out show in the friendly confines as Wrigley Field sees it’s first ever K-pop concert. And it sold out as over 50,000 fans attend the historic night.
The hype leading up to this concert was palpable as Maisey, my teen daughter, has been talking about this show for months leading up to it. She was building up questions, should she meet and interview the band, asking friends who was going, making a custom made shirt for the night of and planning out her visit as the time was here. This is her perspective on what she experienced and learned from attending her first ever K-pop concert. Side note, her first love was Taylor Swift, and this concert even topped that show just a year ago.

Annyeong Haseo (Hello), my name is Maisey Currie. I first learned about the Stray Kids because someone at school had the letters, S.K.Z. on their book bin in the classroom. I was curious to what that was so I searched them up online when I got home. Those letters meant Stray Kids, Stray Kids Zone. I listened to their music and liked it. I got more and more into them, then I found out they were coming to Chicago to play a concert. I had to go.
We drove to the concert during rush hour and when we finally got there to park, there was a Stray Kids sign near us and it was adversing themed drinks. One that I noticed was called, MANIAC lemonade. That is a title of a Stray Kids song. From there, we ran to the entrance of the show as it was starting. We could hear the music and people yelling inside.
Once we got in, we found our seats, sat down and watched the show. Most of the audience around us was girls my age or their parents.
It started out with the first song, ‘Chk Chk Boom’. The stage had dancers, videos playing on the video wall behind them and they came out singing and dancing with a live band playing in the background.
Near the middle of the concert, the audience was quiet because everyone in the Stray Kids was talking and we wanted to hear every word. Someone out of nowhere shouted in the quiet, “Marry Me Felix!” and in my mind, I was thinking, “No, he’s mine!”. And so did many other people as we heard them cheer back with anticipation.

Some of my favorite songs they played were, “Miroh”, “My Pace”, “SUPER BOARD” and “TOPLINE”. I like these songs because they are more calm songs with a catchy tune behind them. SUPER BOARD and TOPLINE are upbeat and excitable songs with more happening in them.
On stage, they had lots of fireworks, streamers, lasers, projections and fire. Occassionally some of the members of Stray Kids would grab things like smoke bombs and water bottles to spread around. Fans really seemed to like this because it was so hot, they wanted the cool water spray. And sometimes during the show, they would even pour water on their own heads to cool off.
At the end of the show, they did a “family picture” with all the fans. STAY is what they call their fans. They told stories, thanked the fans for coming and also one member, Seungmin, told the story about how at one time, before becoming a Stray Kids member, he wanted to be a baseball player. Wrigley Field was very special to him. The Cubs even made him a special shirt with his name on it that he wore with pride.
One of the unique things about attending a k-pop concert is that many fans brought along light sticks. These light sticks lit up and changed colors during songs all in unison if you have the app. I found out about this too late and didn’t know I was supposed to bring one, but when we asked around people told us they got them overseas and on Amazon. They range from $30 to $100 so they are an investment for sure.

I recommend going to a k-pop concert, especially a Stray Kids show because, there is so much to see and do. You can meet new friends and possibly learn and a new language along the way like I have been doing. I started learning Korean language over 2 months ago. Annyeonghi gyeseyo! (Goodbye)
Below is a drawing Maisey drew of the band characters and animal personas.
