Todd Mayfield, Curtis Mayfield’s second oldest son, has written and new book about his Iconic father’s life and times and talks about new movie for the SuperFly Chicagoan’s historic music legacy.
The book, The Traveling Soul, is a son’s recollection of his fathers life through the eyes of someone who lived it with him. Mayfield said, “Many other journalists authors tried writing about my dad, but none of them got it right.” He referenced to the fact that they didn’t know his father personally, just what they saw on the outside and his public figure. Todd Mayfield writes about growing up in Chicago’s Cabrini Green projects and how that was a step up for them as it was the first time they had indoor plumbing.
The book goes deep into the Mayfield family life talking about Curtis’ first recording with his band, The Impressions, at Vee Jay Records on Chicago’s music row. A choice made because Chess Records was closed that day.
