It was a chilly Friday night in St. Charles until Billy Gibbons and the BFGs took the stage at the Arcada Theatre. Billy is on tour supporting his recent solo album “Perfectmundo”. The show opener \u201cTreat Her Right<\/a>\u201d (click song title for video) is a Roy Head cover song for which Billy \u201cCubanized\u201d for his new album. The next two songs, “Pickin’ Up Chicks on Dowling Street” and “Sal y Pimiento” are also from the new album which have the Texas blues sound infused with the Afro-Cuban style on the \u201cPerfectmundo\u201d album.<\/p>\n

The crowd was grooving to the new tunes and wanted to hear some ZZ Top, so Billy dug deep into the catalog and played \u201cTen Foot Pole\u201d. The BFGs then performed \u201cGot Love If You Want It\u201d from the new album. The next song, \u201cThe Drifter\u201d is from Hammond B-3 organ master Mike Flanigin\u2019s solo album of the same title. Billy and the BFGs got the crowd rocking\u2019 with the cover of Little Richard\u2019s \u201cGood Golly Miss Molly\u201d then segueing into another ZZ Top tune, \u201cThunderbird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cQuiero mas dinero\u201d which translates to \u201cI Want More Money\u201d is another new \u201cSlanguish Spanglish Afro-Cuban\u201d (as Billy calls it) song from the new album. The next song was a cover of Lightnin\u2019 Hopkins\u2019 \u201cBaby Please Don’t Go.\u201d The funky grooving song \u201cYou’re What’s Happenin’, Baby\u201d was next which then turned into a band jam lead by the \u2018Rev. Wille\u2019 preaching to the audience. They ended the set with \u201cLa Grange\u201d with the crowd standing and grooving to this ZZ Top standard.<\/p>\n

I was surprised with Billy\u2019s encore selection of Led Zepplin\u2019s \u201cWhole Lotta Love.\u201d This included an awesome dueling drum battle between Melanie and SoZo. It was a great ending to an awesome night!<\/p>\n

(Side note:) Opening act was\u00a0Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown from Nashville, TN. \u00a0They were a four piece, stripped down blues rock band that absolutely lit the place up. \u00a0Even though they were stripped down to just a drum, electric guitar and acoustic guitar, this 3\/4 piece band knew how to rock what they had. \u00a0They played straight forward blues. Deep, heartfelt blues with as much passion and energy as a full band. \u00a0Tyler Bryant is one amazing guitarist\/signer\/songwriter. \u00a0Be on the look out for more to come from them.
