There are concert memories that stick with you and then there are the ones that come full circle. For me, Jeff Tweedy has been part of that soundtrack for almost 30 years. Long before Wilco was filling festivals, legendary theaters and giant venues, I first saw Jeff Tweedy play in the intimate confines of Lounge Ax on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago the iconic club owned by his wife, Sue Miller. It was a completely different world back then. Small room. Close crowd. No spectacle. Just a great songwriter standing in front of a room full of people who were there because they wanted to hear the songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Fast-forward 29 years and somehow, tonight, I found myself standing in another small, independent club watching Tweedy do essentially the same thing. Only this time, the room was Fitzgerald\u2019s in Berwyn. And his following has gotten considerably bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The second night of Tweedy\u2019s three-night Fitzgerald\u2019s residency felt like somebody had taken a page out of the Lounge Ax playbook and dropped it into the Near West Side suburbs. Fitzgerald\u2019s is exactly the kind of independent club where something like this belongs; intimate, unpredictable and willing to throw a curveball at its audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The night opened with Official Claire, an artist delivering a warm set of folk-rock songs. For this performance, Claire was joined by guitarist Brooks Palmer and a familiar face on backup vocals and sampler, Jeff Tweedy\u2019s son, Sammy Tweedy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

By the time Claire wrapped up, Fitzgerald\u2019s was already packed. Then it got ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Fans continued pouring through the doors until the place was literally busting at the seams, with people spilling outside onto the sidewalk just trying to be part of the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This wasn’t a crowd of twenty-somethings discovering Wilco for the first time. This was a patio full of people who had been around the block a few times, mostly late 40-somethings and up, longtime Wilco fans and, judging by at least one Lounge Ax T-shirt spotted in the crowd, people who remembered when seeing Tweedy meant squeezing into a tiny Lincoln Park club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

When Jeff Tweedy finally walked onto the stage, the reaction made it clear just how badly this audience wanted this. Behind him sat a collection of guitars. That was it. No Wilco. No band. No elaborate production. Just Jeff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It was about as close as you could get to those early Lounge Ax days except now that intimate songwriter was standing in front of a much larger following that knew practically every word he was about to sing celebrating his 40 year career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Tweedy opened with \u201cKC Rain (No Wonder)\u201d and settled immediately into the kind of loose, conversational performance that makes a small club feel like somebody’s living room. There were stories. There were jokes. There were plenty of moments where Tweedy simply talked with the audience. And then somebody yelled, \u201cYou look so hot!\u201d The entire room erupted. Tweedy smiled, thanked the guy and moved right along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But the comment wasn’t going away. Later, when Tweedy reached \u201cI’m The Man Who Loves You,\u201d a song he traditionally dedicates to his wife, he paused and added something along the lines of, maybe he should rededicate it to the guy who told him he was hot. Another laugh ensued. That was the atmosphere all night. Loose. Funny. Personal. As the song was ending and during a pause, the man in the audience shouted back, “You’re so hot right now!” in his deep gravely voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Tweedy has spent decades writing songs that can carry a lot of emotional weight, but tonight he seemed more interested in letting the audience into the stories behind them. Between songs, he offered little tales and observations, giving these familiar songs a little extra context. And the audience knew them. Really knew them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

There was no waiting for the chorus to figure out what came next. Fans sang along with practically every lyric, sometimes loud enough to become another instrument in the room. The 20-song set stretched across Tweedy’s entire musical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Wilco songs like \u201cI Am Trying to Break Your Heart\u201d and \u201cStory to Tell\u201d sat comfortably alongside Uncle Tupelo’s \u201cNew Madrid.\u201d Billy Bragg material like \u201cRemember the Mountain Bed\u201d and \u201cCalifornia Stars\u201d reminded everyone of the enormous musical family Tweedy has been part of for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

His solo work also found its way into the night with \u201cEnough\u201d and \u201cForever Never Ends.\u201d It was a set built less around a traditional concert arc and more around the history of the songs themselves. And that’s what made this particular night feel different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

For those of us who have been following Tweedy for decades, this wasn’t simply another Jeff Tweedy show. It was a reminder of where all of this started. A guy. A guitar. A room full of people who cared. The biggest difference was the size of the following. Fitzgerald’s could barely contain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The evening ended with \u201cLou Reed Was My Babysitter,\u201d and Sammy Tweedy joined his father onstage. Once again, the audience became part of the performance, firing back the song’s famous \u201cwoos and groans\u201d during the chorus. Midway through, without missing a beat, Tweedy let the audience know, they came in way to early. Chuckles ensued. The song continued. Tweedy said, “I’ll give you another change to redeem yourselves. And with that, everyone was back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Then it was over. The last notes of Jeff’s acoustic guitar rang through the great wooden shelter. He hugged Sammy, set down his guitar and gave the audience a wave of appreciation. And just like that, he was gone. Back into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

According to Fitzgerald’s owner Will Duncan, getting Tweedy into the club has been something the venue had been trying to make happen for a while. \u201cWe’ve been trying to get Jeff to be a part of our scene for a while but just couldn’t get it to line up,\u201d Duncan told me. The timing finally worked continuing with, “with him not currently touring with Wilco or committed to a major tour, we offered him these three dates and this time everything lined up.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It’s another example of what Fitzgerald’s has continued to do under Duncan’s ownership. The club has been steadily evolving without losing the character that made it a landmark in the first place. Updated sound systems, lighting and other small changes have joined the addition of the barn pavilion in the lot, while the booking philosophy continues to embrace change and variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Local bands, national acts and international artists can all find a home there. And tonight, one of America’s most celebrated songwriters walked into that courtyard and played like it was 1997 again. Except this time, there were lots of people outside who couldn’t get in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Tomorrow, Friday night, Jeff Tweedy plays the final night of his Fitzgerald’s residency. After 30 years of watching Tweedy’s musical journey, I’m reminded that sometimes the best concerts aren’t the biggest ones. Sometimes they’re the ones where you can see the artist, hear every word, laugh along with the stories and look around the room and realize that everyone there has their own history with these songs. Tonight, at Fitzgerald’s, a little piece of Lounge Ax came back to life. And for one night, Jeff Tweedy made a very big room inside a very small club feel like home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
