There are nostalgia tours, and then there are events that feel like someone opened a portal straight back to the closing years of the 20th century. Day One, of Summer of ’99 and Beyond at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park on Saturday, did exactly that, assembling five bands whose music helped define a generation raised on MTV’s Total Request Live<\/em>, burned CDs and late-night LAN parties. This marks the festivals 3rd year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The lineup; Puddle of Mudd, Kittie, Sevendust, Cypress Hill and Limp Bizkit served as a reminder that the late-’90s rock explosion wasn’t just a musical movement. It became a lifestyle that still resonates nearly three decades later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking through the parking lots and concourse, it wasn’t hard to spot who grew up with these bands. Thousands of forty-something fans proudly sported vintage concert shirts, wallet chains and, perhaps most noticeably, backward red New York Yankees baseball caps in a nod to Fred Durst’s signature look. The biggest difference from 1999? Many of those same fans were now introducing the music to their own teenagers. Parents and kids packed the amphitheater together, creating one of the most multi-generational crowds the venue has seen all summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival also arrived during one of the hottest weekends of the year. Temperatures baked the venue throughout the afternoon, forcing fans to seek whatever shade they could find between sets. As darkness finally settled over Tinley Park, relief came with an eerie twist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Smoke drifting south from the Canadian wildfires slowly rolled across the amphitheater, blending seamlessly with the production haze. At times it became impossible to tell where the stage effects ended and Mother Nature began, giving the evening an almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere that strangely fit the aggressive soundtrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puddle of Mudd got the crowd moving early and shocked many fans around me who didn’t think they knew who they were until the heard the songs. Then it was one after another of apparently never tying the name to the band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of their set, singer Wes Scantlin brought out his son to play guitar on a song. His son, who looked very much like Wes did 30 years ago, towered over him and wailed on the six string next to his dad. Not the last time one of the Summer of 99 bands family members were brought out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kittie delivered one of the day’s heaviest performances, proving the pioneering metal outfit has lost none of its intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lead by the Lander sisters, Morgan on vocals and guitar and Mercedes on drums and backing vocals, thier quartet raged louder than anyone at the festival. Ripping through songs nearly non stop this women still prove powerful in the world of hard and heavy rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sevendust followed with one of the afternoon’s biggest surprises when Fred Durst casually walked onto the stage to mingle and welcome the band, sending fans into a frenzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’ve been around for many many years, as singer Lajon Whitherspoon let the house know. “Yes, we’re old. We’ve been doing this a very long time”. He said with a smile. Mid set, Whitherspoon brought out his pre teen son and introduced him to the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Drummer Morgan Rose was sporting a new look as he seemed to be channeling Wes Borland or Joe Lutz and was in full abstract makeup. I’ve seen them since the early days and don’t remember him ever cosplaying but it was a good fit for this festival and he still destroys the kit like no one else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cypress Hill reminded everyone why they’ve remained one of hip-hop’s most respected live acts. B-Real and Sen Dog mixed classic staples with a taste of new material, showing they’re still looking forward rather than simply living off nostalgia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Their celebration of the era extended beyond their own catalog, paying tribute to fellow ’90s icons with covers of Rage Against the Machine and House of Pain, both of which had the audience enthusiastically shouting every lyric. They were even joined by a live drummer that absolutely destroyed that drum kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came Limp Bizkit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the moment the first riff rolled out, the production screamed retro. Giant cassette tapes featuring artist like Metallica, Beastie Boys and Tool sat in a rack on a giant desk or shelf, oversized boom boxes and colorful throwback props transformed the stage into something resembling an oversized bedroom from 1988 rather than 1999. That contradiction became one of the night’s more curious themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the start, the backdrop screen projected every lyric to every song as Fred Durst invited fans to sing along. It was like a Karoke of sorts. Maybe like a giant monitor on a kids desktop in his bedroom with white text on a black background. And this didn’t go un noticed as the house sang along with just about every track. No that it was needed but for the new fan base watching, it helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between songs, snippets of ’80s favorites like “Tainted Love,” “The Promise” and of course their cover of “Faith” echoed through the amphitheater, while several visual elements leaned heavily into that decade as well. For a festival celebrating the music of 1999, Limp Bizkit’s presentation often felt more like a tribute to the decade that came before it. It was entertaining, but occasionally left you wondering exactly which era the band wanted to celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wes Borland once again proved why he’s one of rock’s most unpredictable visual performers. His latest costume looked less like a guitarist in a nu-metal band and more like a mysterious warrior pulled directly from Game of Thrones<\/em>. As always, his bizarre appearance always complements his razor-sharp playing rather than distracting from it. This is a highlight for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The band also carried an emotional reminder of time’s passage. Filling in on bass was Richie Buxton, stepping into the role following the death of original bassist Sam Rivers last year. While Rivers’ absence was certainly felt by longtime fans, Buxton handled the responsibility with confidence and helped keep the band’s trademark groove intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The set featured plenty of audience participation and banter, including bringing two young women from the crowd onstage to help sing “Full Nelson,” creating another memorable fan moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fred Durst also spent much of the evening poking fun at Creed frontman Scott Stapp. Creed is the headliner for night two of the festival. Throughout the performance, giant video screens displayed increasingly ridiculous AI-generated images of Stapp striking exaggerated wide-legged poses beneath the caption “With Legs Wide Open.” Whether it was an affectionate callback to one of rock’s most famous rivalries or simply Durst keeping an old joke alive, the crowd laughed harder with every new image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just when it appeared the show was winding down, the evening took its strangest turn. Police officers suddenly stormed the stage, appearing to interrupt the concert while accusing the band of possessing everything from bags of marijuana and cocaine to an assortment of sex toys discovered among Durst’s person. The staged bust became increasingly absurd before the punchline finally landed. The “officers” removed their hats to reveal themselves as the familiar law enforcement characters from the Super Troopers<\/em> film franchise, using the bit to promote the upcoming release of Super Troopers 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than ending there, Limp Bizkit launched back into another blistering performance of “Break Stuff,” this time with the faux troopers joining the chaos onstage. It was an appropriately ridiculous conclusion to an evening that rarely took itself too seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band wrapped up at approximately 10:30 p.m. a full thirty minutes before the venue’s curfew leaving fans with enough time to beat some traffic while still feeling like they’d received a complete evening of entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer of ’99 and Beyond isn’t trying to rewrite history. It’s celebrating it. Day One successfully transported thousands of fans back to a simpler era when rap-rock ruled the airwaves, CD players skipped with every pothole, and Fred Durst’s backward red cap was one of the most recognizable images in popular music. Judging by the smiles shared between parents reliving their youth and kids discovering these songs for the first time, nostalgia remains one of live music’s most powerful attractions. Even with the weather extreme temps and soot soaked air, everyone genuinely seemed to have a good time and partied like it was 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
