Erasure\u2019s Andy Bell brought his Ten Crowns Tour to the historic Lincoln Theatre on<\/em> \u201cWashington\u2019s Black Broadway\u201d in the U Street neighborhood of the Nation\u2019s Capital,<\/em> where he delivered a high-energy set comprised of songs from his latest solo album, Ten<\/em> Crowns, along with all the Erasure hits. Theatrical hard rock maiden Savannah Pope<\/em> opened the show with a short but powerful set of rock \u2019n\u2019 roll bangers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savannah Pope walked onstage wearing a mysterious black cape while Adam Gimenez<\/em> (guitar, synthesizer) handled the music. As she dropped her cape, it was as if a butterfly<\/em> were emerging from its chrysalis and metamorphosing right before our eyes\u2014unleashing<\/em> her imposing yet enchanting persona upon the audience with her bright blonde curls, white<\/em> Victorian-esque corset minidress, and vivid red platform shoes. Throughout her<\/em> performance, Pope paced back and forth and, at one point, left the stage to walk through<\/em> the crowd, drawing the audience into her performance while Gimenez held down both<\/em> guitar and keyboard duties.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I took in the show, I couldn\u2019t help but think of her obvious influences\u2014David Bowie,<\/em> Queen, and Heart\u2014but I also imagined that theater must have played a crucial role in the<\/em> development of her style. Gimenez\u2019s flashy playing only amplified the theatrical flair as he<\/em> provided all the right embellishments. The crowd ate it up, and some even sucked on<\/em> pacifiers that Pope tossed into the audience as she belted out the lyrics to \u201cDaddy<\/em> Issues.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During their set, Pope encouraged the audience to connect with her by noting the following<\/em> phone number\u2014855-963-5013\u2014and texting the word \u201cCreature\u201d to join her private fan<\/em> community. Andy Bell\u2019s Nashville-based touring band\u2014Grammy Award-winning producer, remixer, and<\/em> DJ Dave Aud\u00e9 (keyboards, programming), Jerry Fuentes (guitar), Sarah Tomek (drums), and<\/em> Chelsea King-Blank (vocals)\u2014opened the show playing \u201cBreaking Thru the Interstellar,\u201d<\/em> setting the stage for Bell\u2019s grand entrance. Dressed in a giant pink sequin outfit, he<\/em> commanded attention and set the mood for the night. While the crowd showed their love<\/em> for Bell\u2019s opening number, they went wild when the band kicked into Erasure\u2019s \u201cBlue<\/em> Savannah.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell set the pace for the evening, hardly slowing down and all but challenging the crowd to<\/em> keep up. His banter was friendly and inviting, showcasing his confident yet selfdeprecating<\/em> demeanor. Before performing \u201cHeart\u2019s a Liar,\u201d a duet he sang with Deborah<\/em> Harry on his latest solo album, Bell introduced King-Blank and quipped that she\u2019d be<\/em> playing the role of Harry for the next song. The band and audience appreciated the big<\/em> shoes she had to fill\u2014but everyone knew she\u2019d nail it and own it. Bell was gracious,<\/em> praising his touring band members and giving them moments to shine. At the halfway<\/em> mark, Bell stepped aside while the band performed Erasure\u2019s \u201cBreathe,\u201d featuring Fuentes<\/em> and King-Blank on vocals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a killer rendition of Electric Light Orchestra\u2019s \u201cXanadu,\u201d Bell spent a moment talking<\/em> about their pre-show soundcheck and how the venue was built before PAs and<\/em> microphones were needed\u2014then launched into some operatic vocalisms. Later, he<\/em> discussed astrology and his being a stubborn Taurus who enjoyed the finer things in life.<\/em> Bell then joked about having a mood ring that never changed because he was such a<\/em> miserable bastard all the time\u2014prompting laughter from both him and the audience at his<\/em> sardonic wit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell and company ended their regular set with an inspirational rendition of Erasure\u2019s<\/em> \u201cOh l\u2019amour\u201d before leaving the stage. The crowd clearly hadn\u2019t had their fill and screamed<\/em> for Bell to return for an encore. Ever the showman, he obliged, delivering a heartfelt<\/em> performance of \u201cThank You,\u201d a somber love song for \u201call the people and friends that came<\/em> along for the ride,\u201d which the audience deeply appreciated. Of course, Bell closed the<\/em> night on a high note with Erasure\u2019s \u201cA Little Respect.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a way to end the show! It was an incredible night for a couple of reasons. I loved<\/em> hearing all of Erasure\u2019s hits and never thought I\u2019d get the chance to see them\u2014whether as<\/em> a band or solo artist\u2014so I was grateful for this opportunity. But what truly made it a night to<\/em> remember was seeing my wife, Fleurette Estes, singing and dancing while capturing some<\/em> great photos. I knew she was an Erasure fan, but there\u2019s nothing like a live performance to<\/em> really move people. So thank you, Mr. Andy Bell, for a great night.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
