From core classics to genre-defying collaborations, Ravinia celebrates the versatility and vitality of classical music. The&nbsp;<strong>Chicago Symphony Orchestra<\/strong>&nbsp;(CSO) will be in residence for six weeks, performing with Ravinia Chief Conductor&nbsp;<strong>Marin Alsop<\/strong>&nbsp;and soloists including&nbsp;<strong>Garrick Ohlsson<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Sheku Kanneh-Mason<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Jean-Yves Thibaudet<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Himari<\/strong>, and Tony Award winners&nbsp;<strong>Sutton Foster<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Kelli O\u2019Hara<\/strong>. As well as interpreting iconic repertoire such as Stravinsky\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Rite of Spring<\/em>, Mahler\u2019s Second Symphony, and Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Sheherazade<\/em>, the CSO will also partner with<strong>&nbsp;Beck<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Cynthia Erivo<\/strong>, and Oscar winner&nbsp;<strong>Morgan Freeman<\/strong>&nbsp;for specially orchestrated performances. This summer\u2019s festival highlights Women Leaders in Food and Music.&nbsp;<strong>Molly Yeh<\/strong>\u2014not only the star of Food Network\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Girl Meets Farm<\/em>&nbsp;but also a Juilliard-trained percussionist\u2014will join Alsop to co-curate orchestral and chamber concerts, where musical works will be paired with culinary dishes by guest celebrity chefs, including&nbsp;<strong>Maneet Chauhan<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Jacqueline Eng<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Sarah Grueneberg<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Mika Leon<\/strong>. All performances take place in the Pavilion.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a><strong>July 11<\/strong>\u00a0\\ The CSO opens its 89th summer season at Ravinia Festival under the baton of\u00a0<strong>Marin Alsop<\/strong>. Highlighting the conductor\u2019s passion for contemporary music, the evening begins with Carlos Simon\u2019s\u00a0<em>Amen<\/em>, a work inspired by the composer\u2019s youthful experiences of African American Pentecostal Church services. Next, piano virtuoso\u00a0<strong>Bruce Liu<\/strong>* joins the orchestra for Rachmaninoff\u2019s\u00a0<em>Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini<\/em>, whose striking melodies resonate through popular culture. Alsop and the CSO complete their program with Stravinsky\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Rite of Spring<\/em>, the ballet score that revolutionized 20th-century music. The opening night performance will be broadcast live on<strong>\u00a0WFMT<\/strong>\u00a0radio.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a><strong>July 12<\/strong>\u00a0\\ Written a hundred years ago this year, Gershwin\u2019s jazz-infused Concerto in F will feature French pianist\u00a0<strong>Jean-Yves Thibaudet<\/strong>, of whom \u201cthere\u2019s no mistaking his understanding of [Gershwin\u2019s] blues-based melancholy [and] Impressionism,\u201d wrote the\u00a0<em>Chicago Tribune<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>Marin Alsop<\/strong>\u00a0bookends the program with Jessie Montgomery\u2019s folk-dance-inspired\u00a0<em>Strum\u00a0<\/em>and Tchaikovsky\u2019s Sixth Symphony, a deeply emotional work known for its lyrical beauty and ultimately tragic finale.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a><strong>July 13<\/strong>\u00a0\\ Ending their opening weekend on a high note,\u00a0<strong>Marin Alsop<\/strong>\u00a0and the CSO welcome Tony Award winners\u00a0<strong>Sutton Foster<\/strong>* and\u00a0<strong>Kelli O\u2019Hara<\/strong>\u00a0to celebrate the transformative impact of music on budding young minds. That moment so often strikes at iconic venues like Ravinia and Carnegie Hall, where a Young People\u2019s Concert first set Alsop on the path to become one of the world\u2019s foremost conductors, and where Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett once enraptured a generation of singers. His arrival at his most recent album,\u00a0<em>Hyperspace<\/em>, comes by way of his touchstone\u00a0<em>Odelay<\/em>, world-tripping\u00a0<em>Mutations<\/em>, somber\u00a0<em>Sea Change<\/em>, laureled\u00a0<em>Morning Phase<\/em>, and more. Led by conductor and Ground Zero Blues Club artist\u00a0<strong>Martin Gellner<\/strong>*, this program draws on cinematic storytelling and performances by authentic blues artists to celebrate the Delta\u2019s lasting influence on global music.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a><strong>August 3<\/strong>\u00a0\\\u00a0Rich in emotion, celebration, and drama, Tchaikovsky\u2019s music is a multi-generational CSO concert tradition at Ravinia. The three co-Artistic Directors of the Steans Jazz Program will select three winning pieces and work closely with the composers to refine the music in collaboration with the house ensemble of Steans Jazz and Piano &amp; Strings Programs alums, who will perform the premieres.
