Rarely the home for top tier metal acts, the Chicago Theater hosted one of the year\u2019s top metal tours on Thursday as the one and only King Diamond brought his St. Lucifer\u2019s Hospital show to town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a stage set that looked like a combination between a mansion and an asylum\u2014complete with creepy oddities in jars and cages\u2014the show visited numerous eras, including, of course, the Abigail<\/em> and Them<\/em> years\u2014but there were some surprises as well, including diehard favorites \u201cVoodoo\u201d and \u201cThe Candle.\u201d  The band is as tight as ever\u2014lead guitarist and long-time writing partner Andy Larocque remains one of the single-best metal guitarists out there, delivering the signature riffs from \u201cSleepless Nights\u201d and \u201cMansion in Darkness\u201d with precision rarely heard on the live stage from even the most seasoned bands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theatrics were in full effect, from wheelchair bound \u201cGrandma\u201d to Miriam from the Abigail<\/em> saga (all played by actress Jodi Cachia) to an iron mask-bound mental patent during \u201cMasquerade of Madness,\u201d and of course, King himself was the ringmaster for it all, opening the show by impaling baby Abigail and entombing her in a coffin during \u201cFuneral.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black metal vocalist and artist Myrkur is along for the ride this time, handling keyboards and backup vocals that took the show\u2019s emotional and sonic depth to new heights, allowing for the rich and layered harmonies on record to translate to the stage. \u201cHalloween\u201d was an aptly-timed choice, and new songs \u201cSpider Lilly\u201d and \u201cElectro Therapy\u201d were a tantalizing taste of things to come\u2014in addition to mentioning that there are no less than three King Diamond records on the horizon (the first rumored to be out in Summer 2025), he also let slip that a new Mercyful Fate record may be on the way\u2014a lot to look forward to on the horizon for the King Diamond coven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York thrash gods Overkill remain perhaps the best and most consistent band of the \u201880s thrash boom, with one of the richest discographies and the most pummeling live performances you\u2019re likely to see.\u00a0 A short but sweet set offered up most of the band\u2019s hits, including the fright train groove of \u201cHello from the Gutter\u201d and a rousing call-and-response version of the Subhumans\u2019 \u201cFuck You.\u201d\u00a0 California-based power metal act Night Demon delivered a strong set to kick off the night as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
