Bay Area thrash legends Vio-lence decimated Reggie\u2019s on Saturday with their Eternal Nightmare<\/i> retrospective.\u00a0 <\/span>Playing their 1988 debut album front to back, vocalist Sean Killian led the current lineup through a short but sweet set that proved the band\u2019s current incarnation has a lot of gas in the tank.<\/p>\n

The only continuous member of the band as of this spring when founding guitarist Phil Demmel announced his departure, Killian\u2019s voice still had the signature snarl on cuts like \u201cSerial Killer,\u201d \u201cOfficer Nice,\u201d and set-closer \u201cWorld in a World\u201d from 1990\u2019s Oppressing the Masses<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>Surely one of the best thrash tracks of all-time, \u201cWorld\u201d exemplified\u2014then and now\u2014Vio-lence\u2019s brutal song structure, each one a roller-coaster of riffs and tempo shifts that saw one of the biggest pits in recent Reggie\u2019s memory take over the main floor. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Killian was in appreciation mode all night, constantly moving and interacting with the crowd, and while the rhythm section was tight as hell\u2014bassist Christian Olde Wolbers and drummer Adrian Aguilar\u2014it was hot-shot new guitarist Mario Salcedo who stole the show, taking on all the guitar parts from what used to be two lead players.\u00a0 <\/span>A cover of the Dead Kennedy\u2019s \u201cCalifornia Uber Alles\u201d with Exhorder vocalist\/guitarist Kyle Thomas was another highlight, bridging the gap between Vio-lence\u2019s thrash roots and Killian\u2019s love of punk rock. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New Orleans-based thrash outfit Exhorder delivered a monster set that tackled something from each of their albums dating back to 1985, and Thomas gave a nod to punk as well, noting that Exhorder had to fight to earn their place in the early \u201880s metal scene.\u00a0 <\/span>They continued to prove that work ethic through their 45-minute set that included new tune \u201cYear of the Goat\u201d and titular singalong, \u201cExhorder.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting off the night, Virginia\u2019s Deceased and L.A. death metal outfit Mortal Wound delivered short but sweet and savage sets.<\/p>\n
