Chicago\u2019s own Alkaline Trio made a triumphant hometown appearance at the sold-out Aragon Ballroom on Saturday, adding a new and exciting chapter to the band\u2019s history as one of the city\u2019s best power-pop\/punk acts.<\/p>\n

Guitarist\/vocalist Matt Skiba, bassist\/vocalist Dan Andriano, and drummer Atom Willard took the stage in matching suits to \u201cHot for Preacher\u201d from new album Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, and while the band delved nicely into the new material, the setlist was a strong balance of classics as well. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho here was at the Fireside Bowl shows?\u201d Skiba asked at one point, and a good portion of the Aragon\u2019s floor went wild.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis is for you, then.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The band launched into an inspired singalong of \u201cCringe\u201d from the band\u2019s 1998 debut Goddamnit<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cArmageddon\u201d and \u201cFuck You Aurora\u201d saw similar singalongs from the crowd, and new tunes like title track \u201cBlood, Hair, and Eyeballs\u201d fit in perfectly with the rest of the band\u2019s oeuvre.\u00a0 <\/span>And while Alkaline are known to history as primarily a punk band, their sound has evolved into something more akin to locals Smoking Popes and even Cheap Trick at times, with undeniable hooks centered in no-bullshit rock arrangements versus the crunchier punk of their early days, and Skiba\u2019s recent turn as a member of Blink-182 seems to have only heightened his songwriting sensibilities, though a return by the end of the setlist to early tracks \u201cStupid Kid\u201d and \u201cPrivate Eye\u201d helped showcase the timeless nature of Alkaline\u2019s output. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
