\u201cAny protesters outside tonight?\u201d Asked Twin Temple vocalist Alexandra James a few songs into their packed headlining set at Metro on Wednesday.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s always a little more fun when they\u2019re out there.\u201d\u00a0 With a coy smile, she then led the band into \u201cLet\u2019s Have a Satanic Orgy\u201d from new album God is Dead.\u00a0 Just two records and a few years into their career, L.A.\u2019s Twin Temple\u2014James and her partner, Zachary, on guitar\u2014have made a huge impression with their wholly unique approach to Satanic rock; namely, doo-wop and \u201850s-style rock n\u2019 roll, a pairing that completely, totally <\/span>works<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beginning the night with a call-to-arms of sorts in which James led the crowd in chants of \u2018Hail Satan\u2019 in celebration of \u2018striking down ignorance,\u2019 the duo\u2014backed by a solid, full band complete with saxophone\u2014shimmied and danced through a fifteen song set that balanced both of their albums with a few surprises thrown in.\u00a0 James is a natural front person, with enough energy to carry the whole room, though there was no need; Twin Temple have quickly become champions of a renewed attitude toward individualism in the contemporary music scene, notable for their devout Satanism and extravagant, bloody imagery.\u00a0 Despite an image that would scare off anyone who isn\u2019t fully on board with their message, the band retained its sense of humor throughout the night.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDoes this look evil to you?\u201d James said, gesturing toward her fluffy, ruffled dress.\u00a0 \u201cI mean, come on.\u00a0 It\u2019s <\/span>pink<\/span><\/i>.\u201d\u00a0 Embodying the rebellious spirit of countless female band leaders over the last few decades, James rises to the challenge easily with a voice to die for\u2014think the best of the \u201860s girl groups, especially on tracks like the sultry grind of \u201cLucifer, My Love,\u201d which saw James making her way across the front of the stage to connect with everyone in the front row.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Twin Temple have already achieved a level of notoriety beyond the wildest dreams of most bands looking to make good on the combination of image, talent, and style, all of which they have in spades.\u00a0 Death threats be damned\u2014after all, rock n\u2019 roll should be exciting, right?<\/span><\/p>\n
