The show opened with footage of Santana\u2019s band performing at the Woodstock festival, which was forty six years ago this month. The band that was on stage tonight was just as good as the one that played at Woodstock. Similar to the Woodstock band, the current band has \u201ca wall\u201d of percussionists which contributed to the energetic and polyrhthmic atmosphere of the evening.<\/p>\n
The band started the show with \u201cSoul Sacrifice\u201d and kept the energy going with \u201cSaideira\u201d and \u201cLove Makes the World Go ‘Round.\u201d \u201cFreedom in Your Mind,\u201d\u00a0\u201cMaria Maria,\u201d and \u201cFoo Foo\u201d turned the pavilion into a giant dance party with the Latin funk and African rhythmic grooves from those songs.\u00a0The only mellow part of the show was \u201cEuropa (Earth’s Cry, Heaven’s Smile)\u201d where Santana shined on this instrumental from the album \u201cAmigos<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n Santana then allowed his son, Salvador to take over the show with a three song set of his material from his upcoming album \u201cFantasy Reality.\u201d With Alex Nester contributing on vocals, Salvador\u2019s songs recieved a nice reception from the younger audience members.<\/p>\n The show continued with Santana\u2019s cover versions of \u201cJin-go-lo-ba,\u201d \u201cEvil Ways,\u201d \u201cA Love Supreme,\u201d \u201cA Place With No Name\u201d and \u201cTequila\u201d with contained a short snippet of \u201cGet Ready.\u201d Carlos acknowledged that when he is in Chicago, he has to play the Blues. He played \u201cChill Out\u201d which is a song that he co-wrote with John Lee Hooker. He finished the set with the hit \u201cSmooth\u201d a song that we wrote with Rob Thomas.<\/p>\n The encore consisted of his covers of Fleetwood Mac\u2019s \u201cBlack Magic Woman\/Gypsy Queen,\u201d Tito Puente\u2019s \u201cOye como va,\u201c \u201cToussaint L’Overture\u201d and \u201cOminous.\u201d<\/p>\n As Carlos said earlier during the show, \u201cWe want to make this the most memorable night ever!\u201d He kept that promise with his blend of rock, jazz, blues, Latin and African rhythmic music that evening.<\/p>\n For photos of the show, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
