\u201cWe\u2019re the longest running charity in emo music,\u201d frontman Buddy Nielsen joked toward the end of Senses Fail\u2019s show at Bottom Lounge on Sunday before launching into \u201cI’m Sorry I\u2019m Leaving,\u201d a heartfelt paean to his daughter and one of several new songs the band played during their long-awaited return to Chicago.\u00a0 \u201cSo stop donating to politicians, and start donating to Senses Fail.\u201d\u00a0 Following two cancellations in the last two years, the band made the most of the small footprint, and while Buddy wasn\u2019t able to indulge in his tradition of spinning mic cords due to the Lounge\u2019s low ceiling, a stellar time was had by all in attendance.<\/p>\n

Opening with \u201cThe Burial of the Dead\u201d from this year\u2019s new release Hell is in Your Head<\/em>, the setlist was a solid mix of old and new, with \u201cCalling All Cars\u201d hitting early and riling the crowd into a nonstop cycle of crowd-surfing.\u00a0 (Shout-out to the guy in the stocking cap with the plaid shirt – this writer counted eight separate times over the barricade for you!)\u00a0 With over twenty years in the game, the band made the most of the Covid downtime, finishing the new album as well as treating fans to two live-streamed shows from Joshua Tree\u2014certainly one of the most ambitious and impressive creative projects for which Covid opened the door, and the Jersey quintet was clearly thrilled to be back in action on a live stage in front of actual people after so long away, and snippets of \u201cMaster of Puppets\u201d during the breakdown of \u201cRum is for Drinking\u201d and Smashmouth\u2019s \u201cAll-Star\u201d during \u201cGold Jacket, Green Jacket\u201d were a playful counterpoint to the bombastic intensity of \u201cWolves at the Door\u201d and Let It Enfold You<\/em> deep cut \u201cNJ Falls Into the Atlantic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis song is a fuck-you from us millennials,\u201d Nielsen said at the beginning of \u201cGold Jacket,\u201d \u201cand this song is about how we\u2019ve persevered as a generation.\u201d\u00a0 If the enthusiastic response from the crowd was any indication, then Senses Fail will continue to persevere as one of the best live bands of that generation, too.<\/p>\n
