CHICAGO (February 22, 2022)\u2014Steppenwolf Theatre Company<\/strong><\/a>, the nation\u2019s premier ensemble theater company, opens its stunning new in-the-round Ensemble Theater in Honor of Helen Zell<\/strong>\u2014the centerpiece of its recently unveiled Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Arts and Education Center<\/strong>\u2014with ensemble member Yasen Peyankov<\/strong>\u2019s extraordinarily funny and lyrical adaptation of Anton Chekhov<\/strong>\u2019s Seagull<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>April 28\u2013June 12, 2022<\/u> (opening May 8).<\/p>\n

Yasen Peyankov <\/strong>directs the production, featuring Steppenwolf co-founder Jeff Perry<\/strong> and fellow ensemble members Sandra Marquez<\/strong>,Caroline Neff<\/strong>, Karen Rodriguez<\/strong>, Eric Simonson<\/strong> and Namir Smallwood<\/strong>, alongside Keith Kupferer<\/strong>, Jon Hudson Odom<\/strong>, Elijah Newman<\/strong>, Joey Slotnick<\/strong> and Lusia Strus<\/strong>. Scott Jaeck<\/strong> will be stepping in for Jeff Perry for performances May 24\u2013June 5. Seagull<\/em> inaugurates the new Ensemble Theater in Honor of Helen Zell<\/strong> at the heart of Steppenwolf\u2019s trailblazing new Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Arts and Education Center<\/strong>, designed by world-renowned architect Gordon Gill FAIA of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. The state-of-the-art 400-seat theater in-the-round is one of its kind in Chicago, with theater design and acoustics by Charcoalblue<\/strong>. Only six rows deep\u2014with audience members never more than 20 feet from the stage\u2014and featuring a modular staging system to vary audience capacity and experience, Charcoalblue designed the incredibly intimate Ensemble Theater from the inside out to integrate the theater into the fabric of the surrounding building.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The opening of the Ensemble Theater with a multigenerational cast stacked with Steppenwolf ensemble members is the culmination of a season-long celebration of the new Arts and Education Center. Steppenwolf has worked over the past year with our operations team, public health advisors and HVAC consultants to prepare its facility to safely welcome patrons back for performances. The addition of the new Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Arts and Education Center has expanded the square footage of the lobbies to nearly twice the previous amount of space offered to guests. Two additional elevators and multiple stairways have also been added to Steppenwolf\u2019s campus for ease of transition between seating levels. The HVAC systems have undergone upgrades to allow for increased filtration and a higher percentage of circulated fresh air across all three theaters.<\/p>\n
