





{"id":38948,"date":"2019-10-16T11:53:45","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T16:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beintheloopchicago.com\/?p=38948"},"modified":"2019-10-17T23:14:29","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T04:14:29","slug":"the-city-of-chicago-designates-2020-as-the-year-of-chicago-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beintheloopchicago.com\/?p=38948","title":{"rendered":"THE CITY OF CHICAGO DESIGNATES 2020 AS THE \u2018YEAR OF CHICAGO MUSIC\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong><em>First-of-its-kind in the United States, the citywide initiative will shine a spotlight on Chicago\u2019s vibrant music scene<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chicago\u2019s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) Commissioner Mark Kelly, Grammy<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and Oscar Award-winning artist Che \u201cRhymefest\u201d Smith and many other civic, arts and music leaders today announced plans to designate 2020 as the \u2018Year of Chicago Music.\u2019 This citywide, year-long focus on music is one of the first of its kind in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The City of Chicago and its partners will launch a marketing campaign that will launch a new marketing brand for Chicago music; provide additional financial grants for music projects; encourage dialog around inclusion and equity; and call on civic, philanthropic, arts and business leaders to support the music industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic is our universal language and the common thread that ties people together across geography, culture, and time. As the birthplace of gospel, house, urban blues, and modern jazz\u2014not to mention home to one of the world\u2019s great classical orchestras\u2014Chicago\u2019s sounds and melodies reflect the diversity and dynamism of the people and communities we all call home,\u201d said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. \u201cFrom our independent music clubs, neighborhood venues, street festivals, and concert halls, the Year of Chicago Music will showcase our thriving music scene on stages and street corners across every one of our 77 neighborhoods, celebrating the distinct rhythm of Chicago\u2019s musical voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is working with key industry leaders and organizations to convene public and private resources in support of the city\u2019s music industries with initial support from the Chicago Community Trust and the Millennium Park Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary plans include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Major sector-building grants to the local music industry via the Chicago Cultural Grants Program \u2013 including support for live music on the South and West Sides, increased general operating support for arts nonprofits and new merit-based awards for musicians;<\/li>\n<li>A 17-day celebration of music starting Memorial Day weekend across Chicago including the Chicago House Music Festival, the Chicago Gospel Music Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival and free and ticketed performances at venues across the city;<\/li>\n<li>Public programming including a special focus on Chicago music at the 40th Annual Taste of Chicago, the Millennium Park Summer Music Series co-programed for the first time with record labels, venues and media companies, the ten-day Chicago Jazz Festival and 17-day World Music Festival Chicago;<\/li>\n<li>Professional support for musicians \u2013 including career development opportunities and a Chicago Musicians Roster;<\/li>\n<li>Support for neighborhoods and venues \u2013 including programs presented in conjunction with the City\u2019s major music festivals; pop-up performances in vacant, underutilized and nontraditional spaces on the South and West Sides and permanent venue space development programs;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>A major advertising and public relations campaign based on a new marketing brand for Chicago music \u2013 including media promotional events around the world and music-themed media tours led by Choose Chicago<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additional details will be announced in early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Year of Chicago Music follows the success of 2017, 2018 and 2019 initiatives celebrating Chicago\u2019s public art, its creative youth and its vibrant theatre scene. Its mission is to place a spotlight on Chicago\u2019s music landscape \u2013 one of the most influential and dynamic musical sectors on the globe \u2013 highlighting its legacy, expanding its audience and strengthening the sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the Year of Chicago Music, DCASE and our partners are committed to showcasing the incredible musicians that call Chicago home. With this initiative we hope to build a citywide culture that sustains our artists and inspires our youth,\u201d said Mark Kelly Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). \u201cBuilding on the city\u2019s rich music legacy, our artists hone their craft and push genre boundaries to create a cultural destination for music lovers around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ambitious effort will be led by a steering committee, an intergovernmental group and 12 working groups focused on venues and clubs, festivals and special events, youth and education, equity and diversity, marketing and more. Over 200 individuals have volunteered to serve on these working groups and committees, representing more than 150 music organizations, entrepreneurs and individual artists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Year of Chicago Music is co-chaired by Commissioner Mark Kelly alongside Margaret Murphy-Webb, Juan D\u00edes, Juan Teague and Che \u201cRhymefest\u201d Smith.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChicago, the metropolis of villages, vibrates with sounds on every corner,\u201d said Che \u201cRhymefest\u201d Smith, Grammy\u00ae and Oscar Award-winning artist. \u201cChicago\u2019s musical legacy shines globally as the inheritors of gospel music, the home of the Blues, the house of house music and the consciousness of hip hop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Created by marketing agency FCB Chicago, the new brand positioning for Chicago music will seek to rebuild Chicago\u2019s reputation as a top tier music capital for both residents and visitors.
