\u201cThere is no real rock n\u2019 roll on the radio today,\u201d croons Creamer lead singer\/guitarist\/frontman Philip Creamer on the way to the chorus of \u201cMagic\u201d from the band\u2019s debut LP (out today) – but that\u2019s about to change if he and his band mates have anything to say about it, and the band\u2019s stellar first appearance in Chicago saw a capacity crowd getting to know exactly what the Nashville quintet had to say on the subject.<\/p>\n
Combining the best elements of early \u201870s power-pop like The Raspberries with moments of Electric Light Orchestra and Queen, along with the jangle of more pop-oriented Americana, Creamer\u2019s sound is, quite simply, timeless. The band\u2019s chemistry was apparent from the the very start of set opener \u201cDaydreamer,\u201d and their sound translated from record to live stage beautifully, with just enough rawness to take tunes like lead single \u201cDrugs No More\u201d and album standout \u201cFor Joan\u201d to a slightly elevated place. Drummer Dave King balances the arrangements from sharp moments of bombast to the quieter moments, and subtle piano accompaniment throughout most of the tunes walks a line between understated and fully-driving the melodies on the infectious \u201cRide or Die\u201d and the sweetly reflective \u201cBad As You.\u201d When the band\u2019s namesake put down his guitar to strut the stage during \u201cRecord Machine,\u201d one couldn\u2019t help but hear a distant homage to Aladdin Sane<\/em>-era Bowie, all the more for Mr. Creamer\u2019s pinstripe suit and the call-and-response chant of \u201cI love my record machine\u201d – a term coined, apparently, by Creamer\u2019s four-year-old son.<\/p>\n If you love your record machine, too, you\u2019d do well to get acquainted with Creamer and their refreshing blend of glam, power pop, and straight up rock n\u2019 roll – because the next time they\u2019re in Chicago, I doubt it\u2019ll be at such an intimate venue.
