Heading into\u00a0Destroyers of the Soft Life,\u00a0<\/em>the fourth LP by J. Roddy Walston and The Business set to be released\u00a0September 29<\/span><\/span>\u00a0via ATO Records, JRWATB pursued a brighter, more nuanced sound that teased out the band\u2019s latent pop sensibilities without skimping on energy or attitude. As you press play on the opening track \u201cYou Know Me Better\u201d, anthemic guitars scream out of buoyant, hooky lyrics as Walston\u2019s chugging piano supplies a persistent heartbeat. The \u201cbar band\u201d sound of the past has been replaced by an aspirational, booming cacophony that could fill stadiums.<\/p>\n

Instead of the raucous bombast JRWATB manifested on their breakout hit album\u00a0Essential Tremors<\/em>, the band\u2019s leader had certain rules he was determined to follow on\u00a0Destroyers of the Soft Life<\/em>. One was: \u201cSpeak\/sing clearly, no hiding behind mumbles.\u201d Another was, \u201cD.I.Y. but hi-fi \u2014\u00a0record ourselves as much as possible but have it sound amazing and full.\u201d The final, most important, rule was, \u201cNostalgia is a cancer \u2014\u00a0acknowledge that you are in the present.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
