As an actress, she made her film debut portraying Effie White in\u00a0Dreamgirls<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2006), for which she gained worldwide acclaim and won the\u00a0Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress<\/a>, a\u00a0Golden Globe Award<\/a>, a\u00a0BAFTA Award<\/a>, anNAACP Image Award<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0Screen Actors Guild Award<\/a>. She has also appeared in such films as\u00a0Sex and the City<\/a><\/i>(2008),\u00a0The Secret Life of Bees<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2008) and\u00a0Winnie Mandela<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2013).
