Lonnie Rashid Lynn<\/b>\u00a0(born March 13, 1972), better known by his stage name\u00a0Common<\/b>\u00a0(formerly\u00a0Common Sense<\/b>), is an American\u00a0hip hop<\/a>\u00a0recording artist, actor, and poet from\u00a0Chicago<\/a>,\u00a0Illinois<\/a>. Common debuted in 1992 with the album\u00a0Can I Borrow a Dollar?<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and maintained a significant\u00a0underground<\/a>\u00a0following into the late 1990s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the\u00a0Soulquarians<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2011, Common launched Think Common Entertainment, his own record label imprint, and, in the past, has released music under various other labels such as\u00a0Relativity<\/a>,\u00a0Geffen<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0GOOD Music<\/a>, among others. Common’s first\u00a0major-label<\/a>\u00a0album,\u00a0Like Water for Chocolate<\/a><\/i>, received widespread critical acclaim and tremendous commercial success.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0His first\u00a0Grammy Award<\/a>\u00a0was in 2003, winning\u00a0Best R&B Song<\/a>\u00a0for “Love of My Life<\/a>“, with\u00a0Erykah Badu<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Its popularity was matched by May 2005’s\u00a0Be<\/a><\/i>, which was nominated for\u00a0Best Rap Album<\/a>, at the\u00a02006 Grammy Awards<\/a>. Common was awarded his second Grammy for\u00a0Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group<\/a>, for “Southside” (featuring Kanye West), from his July 2007 album\u00a0Finding Forever<\/a><\/i>. His best-of album,\u00a0Thisisme Then: The Best of Common<\/a><\/i>, was released on November 27, 2007.<\/p>\n

Common won the 2015\u00a0Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song<\/a>, and the 2015\u00a0Academy Award for Best Original Song<\/a>, for his song “Glory<\/a>” from the 2014 film\u00a0Selma<\/a><\/i>, in which he co-starred as\u00a01960s Civil Rights Movement<\/a>\u00a0leaderJames Bevel<\/a>. Common’s acting career also includes starring significant roles in the films\u00a0Smokin’ Aces<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Street Kings<\/a><\/i>,American Gangster<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Wanted<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Terminator Salvation<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Date Night<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Just Wright<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Happy Feet Two<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0New Year’s Eve<\/a><\/i>.
