The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is pleased to announce the full lineup of performances for the\u00a039th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, August 31- September 3<\/strong>, in\u00a0Millennium Park<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Chicago Cultural Center<\/strong>\u00a0(78 E. Washington St.). A favorite Labor Day weekend tradition, the festival showcases free live performances by important Chicago artists alongside some of the greatest names from around the world on multiple stages.\u00a0 The FREE-admission Chicago Jazz Festival is produced by DCASE and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC). Pianist and MacArthur Fellow,\u00a0Jason Moran<\/strong>\u00a0will lead a special centennial celebration performance for\u00a0Thelonius Monk<\/strong>\u00a0with a presentation of\u00a0In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall 1959<\/em><\/strong>. His tribute to Thelonious Monk is one of three centennial celebrations at the festival in 2017 that were previously announced, including a homage to bebop pioneer Dizzy Gillespie led by his most famous prot\u00e9g\u00e9 and Chicago favorite\u00a0Jon Faddis<\/strong>\u00a0and a celebration of the singular vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.<\/p>\n

Other newly announced performances include a rare appearance by legendary South African drummer\u00a0Louis Moholo-Moholo\u00a0<\/strong>with his London-based combo\u00a0Five Blokes<\/strong>, featuring rising stars\u00a0Shabaka Hutchings<\/strong>\u00a0on saxophone and\u00a0Alexander Hawkins<\/strong>\u00a0on piano. The New York City Balkan band\u00a0Slavic Soul Party!<\/strong>\u00a0will perform the Duke Ellington classic\u00a0Far East Suite\u00a0<\/em>and the Chicago d\u00e9but of the\u00a0Mary Halvorson Octet<\/strong>, led by the increasingly influential guitarist who topped four categories in DownBeat Magazine\u2019s Critics Poll.<\/p>\n

Previously announced headliners include a Sunday-night finale with\u00a0The Rebirth Brass Band<\/strong>\u00a0from New Orleans; the celebration of Ella Fitzgerald with\u00a0Dee Alexander, Frieda Lee, Paul Marinaro,<\/strong>\u00a0Spider Saloff\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Sheila Jordan<\/strong>\u00a0(who will perform her own set with piano icon\u00a0Steve Kuhn)<\/strong>; 90-year-young guitarist\u00a0George Freeman\u00a0<\/strong>birthday celebration; the\u00a0Donny McCaslin Group<\/strong>;\u00a0Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio<\/strong>;\u00a0Allison Miller\u2019s Boom Tic Boom<\/strong>; New Orleans clarinetist\u00a0Dr. Michael White;\u00a0<\/strong>and the towering improviser\u00a0Roscoe Mitchell,<\/strong>\u00a0marking the 50th<\/sup>anniversary of Nessa Records (a label that documented some of his earliest work). Thursday night\u2019s Dizzy Gillespie Tribute features\u00a0Jon Faddis<\/strong>\u00a0leading the\u00a0Chicago Jazz Festival Big Band,\u00a0<\/strong>with special guests\u00a0Jimmy Heath<\/strong>\u00a0(tenor sax),\u00a0Antonio Hart<\/strong>\u00a0(alto),\u00a0Todd Coolman<\/strong>\u00a0(bass) and\u00a0Ignacio Berrora<\/strong>. Finally, Sunday brings the world premiere of\u00a0Matt Wilson\u2019s Honey and Salt,<\/strong>\u00a0based on texts by poet Carl Sandburg.<\/p>\n

Resident Chicago musicians who will perform throughout the festival include the\u00a0Lowdown Brass Band;\u00a0<\/strong>two drummer-led groups, the\u00a0Charles Heath Quartet\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Gustavo Corti\u00f1as\u2019s Snapshot;<\/strong>\u00a0Hearts & Minds<\/strong>\u00a0with bass clarinetist\u00a0Jason Stein;\u00a0<\/strong>vocalists\u00a0Typhanie Monique<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Michele Thomas;\u00a0<\/strong>and two bands honoring great artists of the past:\u00a0Tim Fitzgerald\u2019s Full House,\u00a0<\/strong>a seven-piece inspired by the music of Wes Montgomery, and\u00a0Stu Katz\u2019 Shearing Redux,<\/strong>\u00a0a re-creation of the classic George Shearing Quintet featuring guitar great\u00a0Bobby Broom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Other additions from Chicago\u2019s vast pool of talent are\u00a0Shawn Maxwell\u2019s New Tomorrow,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0Joe Policastro Trio<\/strong>, the\u00a0Josh Berman Quartet,\u00a0<\/strong>trad-jazz favorites the\u00a0Jonathan Doyle Swingtet\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Johnny Blas & His Afro Libre Orquesta.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The final lineup also includes groups led by pianists\u00a0JoAnn Daugherty<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Reggie Thomas,\u00a0<\/strong>a project led by saxist\u00a0Rob Denty<\/strong>and drummer\u00a0Tim Mulvenna, Rooms Trio<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0dana hall\u2019s spring<\/strong>, a band inspired by the early work of drumming legend Tony Williams.<\/p>\n

The Chicago Jazz Festival will kick off at 11 a.m.on\u00a0Thursday, August 31,<\/strong>\u00a0at the Chicago Cultural Center with the\u00a0Jazz Village<\/strong>, featuring Chicago\u2019s jazz community including some of the city\u2019s vibrant record labels, advocacy organizations and live jazz presenters sharing information about the rich diversity of music in the Chicagoland area. Later in the afternoon comes a presentation on Afro Cuban music by percussion great\u00a0Ignacio Berroa<\/strong>, who joined Dizzy Gillespie\u2019s quartet in 1981, as well as performances led by phenom\u00a0Thaddeus Tukes Quintet,<\/strong>guitarist\u00a0Tim Stine\u00a0<\/strong>and internationally acclaimed\u00a0Dave Rempis\u00a0<\/strong>leading a quintet performing the 1964 Blue Note LP\u00a0Action<\/em>\u00a0by alto saxophonist Jackie McLean.<\/p>\n

Festival attendees on Thursday, August 31, will also hear music of the \u201820s and \u201830s by the\u00a0West End Jazz Band\u00a0<\/strong>as well as the\u00a0Curtis Prince Band<\/strong>\u00a0featuring\u00a0Ari Brown<\/strong>, one of Chicago\u2019s most cherished saxophonists. Also at the Chicago Cultural Center,\u00a0Southport Records Celebrates 40 Years of Sparrow,<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>honoring pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow and his venerable Chicago label, whose catalog boasts more than 140 projects in print, including work by Roscoe Mitchell, Willie Pickens, Fred Anderson and Von Freeman.<\/p>\n

Before the festival moves to Millennium Park, the legendary octogenarian pianist\u00a0Willie Pickens<\/strong>\u00a0will be interviewed by Chicago pianist\u00a0Miguel de la Cerna<\/strong>\u00a0in a discussion called \u201cWhat Is This Thing Called Jazz?\u201d followed by a hip-hop\/jazz collaboration with\u00a0Young Chicago Authors<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0Chicago Jazz Composers Collective<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 celebrating 15 years of monthly performances under the direction of founder and vibraphonist\u00a0Kathy Kelly\u00a0<\/strong>at the historic Green Mill nightclub \u2013 will debut new works by a sextet of CJCC members comprising trumpeterJeff Beer,<\/strong>\u00a0saxophonist\u00a0Artie Black<\/strong>, guitarist\u00a0Dave Onderdonk<\/strong>, bassist\u00a0Dan DeLorenzo,<\/strong>\u00a0drummer\u00a0Damon Short,<\/strong>\u00a0and Kelly herself.<\/p>\n

In keeping with the festival\u2019s tradition of nurturing new artists, the\u00a0Roof Top Jazz: Young Jazz Lions<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>on Saturday, September 2 at the\u00a0Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0Millennium Park<\/strong>, will feature select groups from a city-wide jazz band competition that was co-hosted by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Participating schools performing on Saturday include:Kenwood Academy<\/strong>\u00a0High School Jazz Ensemble;\u00a0Morgan Park<\/strong>\u00a0High School Jazz Combo;\u00a0Whitney Young<\/strong>\u00a0High School Jazz Combo;\u00a0Kelly High School<\/strong>\u00a0Jazz Ensemble;\u00a0Jones College<\/strong>\u00a0Prep Jazz Combo and the\u00a0Roosevelt University<\/strong>\u00a0Jazz Ensemble, directed by veteran composer\/arranger\u00a0Marshall Vente,<\/strong>\u00a0playing Coltrane\u2019s\u00a0A Love Supreme\u00a0<\/em>with guest saxophonist\u00a0Brian Gephart.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Sunday, September 3, the\u00a0Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace\u00a0<\/strong>hosts\u00a0Roof Top Jazz: NextGenJazz<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>focusing on up-and-coming Chicago musicians alongside notable regional and national touring artists. The lineup for this year includes:\u00a0Trilogy\u00a0<\/strong>(Kevin King, Jeremy Warren and Jada Stroud); the\u00a0Jenna Przbysz Collective<\/strong>; the\u00a0Infrared Quintet<\/strong>\u00a0led by flautist Kenthaney Redmond; the\u00a0Possibilities Trio<\/strong>\u00a0(Tim Bennett, Dan Stein and Peter Manheim) and\u00a0Chosen Few,<\/strong>\u00a0led by saxophonist\u00a0Isaiah Collier<\/strong>. All the artists are alumni of the Jazz Institute of Chicago\u2019s Jazz Links programs.<\/p>\n
