Washington St.). A favorite Labor Day weekend tradition, the festival showcases free live performances by important Chicago artists alongside some of the greatest names from around the world on multiple stages.\u00a0 The FREE-admission Chicago Jazz Festival is produced by DCASE and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC). For the complete lineup, visit\u00a0<strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagojazzfestival.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chicagojazzfestival.us<\/a><\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pianist and MacArthur Fellow,\u00a0<strong>Jason Moran<\/strong>\u00a0will lead a special centennial celebration performance for\u00a0<strong>Thelonius Monk<\/strong>\u00a0with a presentation of\u00a0<strong><em>In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall 1959<\/em><\/strong>. His tribute to Thelonious Monk is one of three centennial celebrations at the festival in 2017 that were previously announced, including a homage to bebop pioneer Dizzy Gillespie led by his most famous prot\u00e9g\u00e9 and Chicago favorite\u00a0<strong>Jon Faddis<\/strong>\u00a0and a celebration of the singular vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other newly announced performances include a rare appearance by legendary South African drummer\u00a0<strong>Louis Moholo-Moholo\u00a0<\/strong>with his London-based combo<strong>\u00a0Five Blokes<\/strong>, featuring rising stars<strong>\u00a0Shabaka Hutchings<\/strong>\u00a0on saxophone and\u00a0<strong>Alexander Hawkins<\/strong>\u00a0on piano. The New York City Balkan band\u00a0<strong>Slavic Soul Party!<\/strong>\u00a0will perform the Duke Ellington classic\u00a0<em>Far East Suite\u00a0<\/em>and the Chicago d\u00e9but of the\u00a0<strong>Mary Halvorson Octet<\/strong>, led by the increasingly influential guitarist who topped four categories in DownBeat Magazine\u2019s Critics Poll.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Previously announced headliners include a Sunday-night finale with\u00a0<strong>The Rebirth Brass Band<\/strong>\u00a0from New Orleans; the celebration of Ella Fitzgerald with\u00a0<strong>Dee Alexander, Frieda Lee, Paul Marinaro,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Spider Saloff\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Sheila Jordan<\/strong>\u00a0(who will perform her own set with piano icon\u00a0<strong>Steve Kuhn)<\/strong>; 90-year-young guitarist\u00a0<strong>George Freeman\u00a0<\/strong>birthday celebration; the\u00a0<strong>Donny McCaslin Group<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Allison Miller\u2019s Boom Tic Boom<\/strong>; New Orleans clarinetist\u00a0<strong>Dr. Michael White;\u00a0<\/strong>and the towering improviser\u00a0<strong>Roscoe Mitchell,<\/strong>\u00a0marking the 50<sup>th<\/sup>anniversary of Nessa Records (a label that documented some of his earliest work). Thursday night\u2019s Dizzy Gillespie Tribute features\u00a0<strong>Jon Faddis<\/strong>\u00a0leading the\u00a0<strong>Chicago Jazz Festival Big Band,\u00a0<\/strong>with special guests\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Heath<\/strong>\u00a0(tenor sax),\u00a0<strong>Antonio Hart<\/strong>\u00a0(alto),<strong>\u00a0Todd Coolman<\/strong>\u00a0(bass) and\u00a0<strong>Ignacio Berrora<\/strong>. Finally, Sunday brings the world premiere of\u00a0<strong>Matt Wilson\u2019s Honey and Salt,<\/strong>\u00a0based on texts by poet Carl Sandburg.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Resident Chicago musicians who will perform throughout the festival include the\u00a0<strong>Lowdown Brass Band;\u00a0<\/strong>two drummer-led groups, the\u00a0<strong>Charles Heath Quartet\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Gustavo Corti\u00f1as\u2019s Snapshot;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Hearts &amp; Minds<\/strong>\u00a0with bass clarinetist\u00a0<strong>Jason Stein;\u00a0<\/strong>vocalists\u00a0<strong>Typhanie Monique<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Michele Thomas;\u00a0<\/strong>and two bands honoring great artists of the past:\u00a0<strong>Tim Fitzgerald\u2019s Full House,\u00a0<\/strong>a seven-piece inspired by the music of Wes Montgomery, and\u00a0<strong>Stu Katz\u2019 Shearing Redux,<\/strong>\u00a0a re-creation of the classic George Shearing Quintet featuring guitar great\u00a0<strong>Bobby Broom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other additions from Chicago\u2019s vast pool of talent are\u00a0<strong>Shawn Maxwell\u2019s New Tomorrow,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>Joe Policastro Trio<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Josh Berman Quartet,\u00a0<\/strong>trad-jazz favorites the\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Doyle Swingtet\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Johnny Blas &amp; His Afro Libre Orquesta.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The final lineup also includes groups led by pianists\u00a0<strong>JoAnn Daugherty<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Reggie Thomas,\u00a0<\/strong>a project led by saxist\u00a0<strong>Rob Denty<\/strong>and drummer<strong>\u00a0Tim Mulvenna, Rooms Trio<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>dana hall\u2019s spring<\/strong>, a band inspired by the early work of drumming legend Tony Williams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Jazz Festival will kick off at 11 a.m.on\u00a0<strong>Thursday, August 31,<\/strong>\u00a0at the Chicago Cultural Center with the\u00a0<strong>Jazz Village<\/strong>, featuring Chicago\u2019s jazz community including some of the city\u2019s vibrant record labels, advocacy organizations and live jazz presenters sharing information about the rich diversity of music in the Chicagoland area. Later in the afternoon comes a presentation on Afro Cuban music by percussion great\u00a0<strong>Ignacio Berroa<\/strong>, who joined Dizzy Gillespie\u2019s quartet in 1981, as well as performances led by phenom\u00a0<strong>Thaddeus Tukes Quintet,<\/strong>guitarist\u00a0<strong>Tim Stine\u00a0<\/strong>and internationally acclaimed\u00a0<strong>Dave Rempis\u00a0<\/strong>leading a quintet performing the 1964 Blue Note LP\u00a0<em>Action<\/em>\u00a0by alto saxophonist Jackie McLean.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Festival attendees on Thursday, August 31, will also hear music of the \u201820s and \u201830s by the\u00a0<strong>West End Jazz Band\u00a0<\/strong>as well as the\u00a0<strong>Curtis Prince Band<\/strong>\u00a0featuring\u00a0<strong>Ari Brown<\/strong>, one of Chicago\u2019s most cherished saxophonists. Also at the Chicago Cultural Center,\u00a0<strong><em>Southport Records Celebrates 40 Years of Sparrow,<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>honoring pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow and his venerable Chicago label, whose catalog boasts more than 140 projects in print, including work by Roscoe Mitchell, Willie Pickens, Fred Anderson and Von Freeman.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before the festival moves to Millennium Park, the legendary octogenarian pianist\u00a0<strong>Willie Pickens<\/strong>\u00a0will be interviewed by Chicago pianist\u00a0<strong>Miguel de la Cerna<\/strong>\u00a0in a discussion called \u201cWhat Is This Thing Called Jazz?\u201d followed by a hip-hop\/jazz collaboration with\u00a0<strong>Young Chicago Authors<\/strong><em>.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0<strong>Chicago Jazz Composers Collective<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 celebrating 15 years of monthly performances under the direction of founder and vibraphonist\u00a0<strong>Kathy Kelly\u00a0<\/strong>at the historic Green Mill nightclub \u2013 will debut new works by a sextet of CJCC members comprising trumpeter<strong>Jeff Beer,<\/strong>\u00a0saxophonist\u00a0<strong>Artie Black<\/strong>, guitarist\u00a0<strong>Dave Onderdonk<\/strong>, bassist\u00a0<strong>Dan DeLorenzo,<\/strong>\u00a0drummer\u00a0<strong>Damon Short,<\/strong>\u00a0and Kelly herself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the festival\u2019s tradition of nurturing new artists, the\u00a0<strong><em>Roof Top Jazz: Young Jazz Lions<\/em><\/strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em>on Saturday, September 2 at the\u00a0<strong>Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0<strong>Millennium Park<\/strong>, will feature select groups from a city-wide jazz band competition that was co-hosted by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Participating schools performing on Saturday include:<strong>Kenwood Academy<\/strong>\u00a0High School Jazz Ensemble;\u00a0<strong>Morgan Park<\/strong>\u00a0High School Jazz Combo;\u00a0<strong>Whitney Young<\/strong>\u00a0High School Jazz Combo;\u00a0<strong>Kelly High School<\/strong>\u00a0Jazz Ensemble;\u00a0<strong>Jones College<\/strong>\u00a0Prep Jazz Combo and the\u00a0<strong>Roosevelt University<\/strong>\u00a0Jazz Ensemble, directed by veteran composer\/arranger\u00a0<strong>Marshall Vente,<\/strong>\u00a0playing Coltrane\u2019s\u00a0<em>A Love Supreme\u00a0<\/em>with guest saxophonist\u00a0<strong>Brian Gephart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, September 3, the\u00a0<strong>Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace\u00a0<\/strong>hosts\u00a0<strong><em>Roof Top Jazz: NextGenJazz<\/em><\/strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em>focusing on up-and-coming Chicago musicians alongside notable regional and national touring artists. The lineup for this year includes:\u00a0<strong>Trilogy\u00a0<\/strong>(Kevin King, Jeremy Warren and Jada Stroud); the\u00a0<strong>Jenna Przbysz Collective<\/strong>; the\u00a0<strong>Infrared Quintet<\/strong>\u00a0led by flautist Kenthaney Redmond; the\u00a0<strong>Possibilities Trio<\/strong>\u00a0(Tim Bennett, Dan Stein and Peter Manheim) and\u00a0<strong>Chosen Few,<\/strong>\u00a0led by saxophonist\u00a0<strong>Isaiah Collier<\/strong>.
