A favorite Labor Day weekend tradition over August 31\u2013September 3 in Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.), the festival showcases four stages of free live performances by Chicago\u2019s vast jazz talent alongside the greatest jazz artists from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Festival highlights include centennial celebrations of\u00a0<strong>Dizzy Gillespie<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Thelonious Monk<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ella Fitzgerald\u00a0<\/strong>in Millennium Park at the Jay Priztker Pavilion along with headliners:\u00a0<strong>Donny McCaslin Group<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Allison Miller Boom Tic Boom<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Michael White Quartet<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the Rebirth Brass Band<\/strong>\u00a0and many more. The FREE admission Chicago Jazz Festival is produced by DCASE and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>The year\u00a0<\/u>1917 saw the birth of three jazz legends who will be honored at the Chicago Jazz Festival with Centennial Celebrations:\u00a0 Opening night, August 31, will feature the music of\u00a0<strong>Dizzy Gillespie,\u00a0<\/strong>who appeared at the festival in 1980, 1984 and 1989. Gillespie\u2019s tribute will feature his prot\u00e9g\u00e9\u00a0<strong>Jon Faddis<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Chicago Jazz Festival Big Band\u00a0<\/strong>featuring Chicago musicians and special guest artists<strong>\u00a0Jimmy Heath, Ignacio Berrora, Antonio Hart and Todd Coolman<\/strong>. The tribute to\u00a0<strong>Thelonious Monk\u00a0<\/strong>on Friday, September 1, will include a surprise headliner to be announced in June. On Saturday, September 2,\u00a0<strong>Ellabration! 100 Years of Ella Fitzgerald<\/strong>\u00a0will feature the\u00a0<strong>Brad Williams Trio, Sheila Jordan, Dee Alexander, Frieda Lee, Spider Saloff and Paul Mariano<\/strong>. Ella performed at the festival in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, August 31, will also showcase world-renowned, Chicago-born guitarist\u00a0<strong>George Freeman\u00a0<\/strong>with a 90<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Birthday Celebration performance. Performing at the Chicago Jazz Festival since 1978, Freeman has played with Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Johnny Griffin, Richard Holmes Shirley Scott and his brother Von Freeman. The evening will close with\u00a0<strong>Dizzy Gillespie\u2019s Centennial Celebration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>Friday, September 1<\/strong>, before the special Thelonious Monk Tribute, master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Lonnie Smith<\/strong>, will make his fourth appearance at the festival.\u00a0 Saxophonist and composer\u00a0<strong>Donny McCaslin\u00a0<\/strong>will appear with his band \u2013 keyboardist\u00a0<strong>Jason Lindner<\/strong>, drummer\u00a0<strong>Mark Guiliana<\/strong>\u00a0and bassist\u00a0<strong>Tim Lefebve.<\/strong>They are collaborators on David Bowie\u2019s Grammy<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Award-winning album\u00a0<em>Blackstar\u00a0<\/em>and have been touring the world in support of McCaslin\u2019s latest album\u00a0<em>Beyond Now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>Saturday, September 2,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Dr. Michael White Quartet<\/strong>\u00a0will perform ahead of the Ella Fitzgerald Tribute. Widely regarded as one of the leading authorities and culture bearers of traditional New Orleans jazz music, Dr. White is an accomplished, multi-faceted clarinetist, bandleader, composer, musicologist, jazz historian and educator. Following,\u00a0<strong>BassDrumBone,\u00a0<\/strong>a trio of Chicago natives \u2013 trombonist<strong>\u00a0Ray Anderson,<\/strong>\u00a0bassist<strong>\u00a0Mark Helias\u00a0<\/strong>and drummer<strong>\u00a0Gerry Hemmingway\u00a0<\/strong>is drummer and composer<strong>Allison Miller<\/strong>, whose band\u00a0<strong>Boom Tic Boom<\/strong>\u00a0has been described by the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0as \u201ca razor-sharp precision that recalls classic drummer-led ensembles of 50 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>Sunday, September 3<\/strong>, iconoclastic saxophonist and composer\u00a0<strong>Roscoe Mitchell<\/strong>\u00a0and his Quartets celebrate 50 years of Nessa Records. One of the key figures in avant-garde jazz and co-founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Mitchell will be joined by\u00a0<strong>Alvin Fielder<\/strong>\u00a0on drums,\u00a0<strong>Fred Berry<\/strong>\u00a0on trumpet and\u00a0<strong>Junius Paul<\/strong>\u00a0on bass, and the second quartet of will feature Junius Paul once again, along with cellist\u00a0<strong>Tomeka Reid<\/strong>\u00a0and drummer\u00a0<strong>Vincent Davis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Parker often introduced jazz pioneer\u00a0<strong>Sheila Jordan<\/strong>\u00a0as \u201cthe singer with the million dollar ears.\u201d Jordan has \u201cabsorbed bebop from the source, but she\u2019s also a committed modernist whose style has evolved with the ensuing decades,\u201d writes the New Yorker. She\u2019ll be joined by longtime collaborator, pianist Steve Kuhn and his Trio.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Drummer and imaginative jazz spirit\u00a0<strong>Matt Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0welcomes his new combo,\u00a0<strong>Honey and Salt<\/strong>, a celebration of the American poet Carl Sandburg (1878-1967). Wilson, like Sandburg, hails originally from Knox County, Illinois and for many years has composed music inspired by the poet\u2019s work. The festival will close with the New Orleans institution,\u00a0<strong>Rebirth Brass Band<\/strong>, a long-running group at the forefront of the brass band revival.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Jazz Festival is sponsored in part by American Airlines, Chicago Jazz Magazine, Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago Tribune, CLTV-ChicagoLand\u2019s Television, Communications Direct, Downbeat Magazine, Stella Artois and WGN-TV.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the Chicago Jazz Festival is free, and hours for Thursday, August 31, are noon\u20134:30 p.m. at the Chicago Cultural Center and 6:30 p.m.\u20139:30 p.m. in Millennium Park.
