Randolph St.) \u2013 the city\u2019s premier outdoor music venue. In 2017, the festival is celebrating the influence of the urban blues with performances by the genre\u2019s leading artists that include traditional blues, soul, R&amp;B, hip hop and more on four stages and multiple entertainment areas in the park and throughout the city. Performances at the\u00a0<strong>Jay Pritzker Pavilion\u00a0<\/strong>stage run from\u00a0<strong>5 to 9:30 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0each evening.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Friday, June 9 \u2013 Jay Pritzker Pavilion<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On opening night in Millennium Park on Friday, June 9, the festival will celebrate the 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of\u00a0<strong>Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues<\/strong>. For this special performance, blues harpist and three-time GRAMMY\u00ae Award-nominated artist\u00a0Billy Branch is bringing together many of the artists who have been part of the band since the first 1977 performance in Berlin, Germany. The set will include a special tribute to the legendary harpist James Cotton who was a mentor to Branch.<\/p>\n<p>GRAMMY\u00ae and Oscar Award-winning artist\u00a0<strong>Che \u201cRhymefest\u201d Smith<\/strong>\u00a0will perform an opening night tribute to the influence that blues music has had on hip hop. During his set, he will be joined by\u00a0<strong>Billy Branch<\/strong>. Rhymefest grew up on Chicago\u2019s south side and in 2005, he won a GRAMMY\u00ae Award for co-writing the legendary hit record \u201cJesus Walks,\u201d performed by longtime friend Kanye West. In 2015, Smith co-wrote &#8220;Glory&#8221; alongside John Legend and Common for the 2014 motion picture\u00a0<em>Selma<\/em>\u00a0which received the 2015 Academy Award for Best Original Song.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time GRAMMY\u00ae Award-nominated artist\u00a0and American blues legend\u00a0<strong>John Primer and The Real Deal<\/strong>\u00a0will kick off the evening\u2019s performances. John Primer was\u00a0the bandleader and guitarist for Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Magic Slim &amp; The Teardrops. Primer\u2019s personal accolades include a Lifetime Achievement Award that reflects his countless contributions to the history of Chicago blues.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Saturday, June 10 \u2013 Jay Pritzker Pavilion<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Festival is thrilled to welcome Stax legend and soul star\u00a0<strong>William Bell<\/strong>, who is back on top with a 2017 GRAMMY\u00ae Award win for his album\u00a0<em>This is Where I Live<\/em>, his first major release in four decades.\u00a0 The renowned singer-songwriter was honored in 2016 with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting at the 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Annual Americana Honors Awards Show and also inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Theo Huff and the New Agenda Band<\/strong>\u00a0will bring their contemporary soul-blues style to the festival stage. Theo Huff began his career in musical theater productions, working with Ms. Jackie Taylor at the Black Ensemble Theater and his southern-soul sound was influenced by Bobby Rush, Tyrone Davis, Will Clayton and others.\u00a0 This dynamic combination of talents establishes him as a blues artist on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the evening\u2019s performances is Mississippi native,<strong>\u00a0Nellie \u201cTiger\u201d Travis,<\/strong>\u00a0a southern soul diva with a bold voice making her an undeniable force in the Chicago blues community. Early in her career, KoKo Taylor was a major influence, mentor and friend. Earlier this year she made her late night TV debut by performing her 2008 hit\u00a0\u201cSlap Yo\u2019 Weave Off\u201d\u00a0on\u00a0<em>The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Sunday, June 11 \u2013 Jay Pritzker Pavilion<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blues rock musician and Texas native\u00a0<strong>Gary Clark Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0will close the festival on Sunday evening with his electrifying energy and soulful sounds. Recently wowing at the 2017 GRAMMY\u00ae Awards with his performance with William Bell, he recently released a new live album\u00a0<em>Live\/North America 2016<\/em>\u00a0that features all new and unreleased live recordings including the songs &#8220;The Healing&#8221; and &#8220;My Baby&#8217;s Gone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rhiannon Giddens<\/strong>\u00a0last performed at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2014 with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. On February 24, her follow-up album\u00a0<em>Freedom Highway<\/em>\u00a0will be released, including nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs \u2013 \u201cBirmingham Sunday\u201d and the Staple Singers\u2019 well-known single \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dcase.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d8%2c%3a8%407-%3eLCE59%2c87%3f%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5220021&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=21340&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freedom Highway<\/a>,\u201d from which the album takes its name. \u00a0Chicago artist,\u00a0<strong>Ronnie Baker Brooks\u00a0<\/strong>will open the final evening with new material from his first release in 10 years,\u00a0<em>Times Have Changed<\/em>, along with fan favorites.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Day Stages<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The popular day stages contribute to the festival\u2019s reputation as an internationally acclaimed event. Each stage features local and national blues musicians celebrating the genre\u2019s rich tradition and heritage. Stages and performance times are:\u00a0<strong>Budweiser Crossroads\u00a0<\/strong>stage on the South Promenade, 11:15 a.m.\u20136:15 p.m.; the\u00a0<strong>Mississippi Juke Joint<\/strong>\u00a0stage on the North Promenade, 11:30 a.m.\u20137:30 p.m. and the\u00a0<strong>Front Porch\u00a0<\/strong>stage on the Harris Theater Rooftop, noon\u20135:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Budweiser Crossroads\u00a0<\/strong>stage will feature a lineup of local and national artists. On\u00a0<strong>Friday, June 9<\/strong>, longtime Chicago blues vocalist\u00a0<strong>Mary Lane and the No Static Blues Band<\/strong>\u00a0will hit the stage at 12:45 p.m. and fans won\u2019t want to miss the smooth blues of guitarist\u00a0<strong>Guy King<\/strong>\u00a0at 5:15 p.m. to close the day. On\u00a0<strong>Saturday, June 10<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chicago Wind with Matthew Skoller and Deitra Farr<\/strong>\u00a0will kick the day off at 11:15 a.m. with performances all day ending with a\u00a0<strong>Southside Tribute to Killer Ray Allison with Joe Pratt &amp; The Source One Band and JoJo Murray\u00a0<\/strong>at 5:15 p.m. On\u00a0<strong>Sunday, June 11,\u00a0<\/strong>Wisconsin artists\u00a0<strong>The Blues Disciples<\/strong>\u00a0with special guests\u00a0<strong>Ms. Erica Johnson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Milwaukee Slim\u00a0<\/strong>start at 12:45 p.m. Rounding out the lineup on Sunday is the tiny body with the big voice,\u00a0<strong>Melivia \u201cChick\u201d Rodgers\u00a0<\/strong>at 5:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Mississippi Juke Joint<\/strong>\u00a0stage kicks-off on\u00a0<strong>Friday, June 9,<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>Blues in the Schools with Katherine Davis and Stone Academy<\/strong>\u00a0at 11:30 a.m. Performances on opening day include Chicago blues artist,\u00a0<strong>Jarekus Singleton<\/strong>\u00a0at 4 p.m. followed by a jam session with\u00a0<strong>Cedric Burnside<\/strong>\u00a0at 5:30 p.m. On\u00a0<strong>Saturday, June 10,<\/strong>\u00a0at 2:30 p.m. Donda\u2019s House and AARP presents\u00a0<strong>Bridges to the Blues<\/strong>\u00a0featuring original music inspired by Chicago blues music. The artists performing will be selected at a showcase on May 30 at the Chicago Cultural Center with\u00a0<strong>Che \u201cRhymefest\u201d Smith<\/strong>. At 5:30 p.m. the day\u2019s finale is a one of a kind jam session with\u00a0<strong>Kenny \u201cBeedy Eyes\u201d Smith<\/strong>. On\u00a0<strong>Sunday, June 11,<\/strong>\u00a0the day will begin with a panel discussion and tribute to blues aficionado, radio host and co-founder of Living Blues Magazine\u00a0<strong>Amy Van Singel<\/strong>\u00a0at 11:30 a.m., followed by a full day of the Delta blues.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Front Porch<\/strong>\u00a0will start each day at noon, and on<strong>\u00a0Friday, June 9,\u00a0<\/strong>highlights include\u00a0<strong>Henry Gray<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Bob Corritore<\/strong>\u00a0at 2:45 p.m. and at 4:15 p.m. a\u00a0<strong>Tribute to Barrelhouse Chuck<\/strong>featuring\u00a0<strong>Billy Flynn<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Johnny Iguana<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Roosevelt Purifoy<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Piano Willie OShawny<\/strong>. On\u00a0<strong>Saturday, June 10,<\/strong>\u00a0at 1:20 p.m, fans of Eddie Taylor, Sr. will enjoy a tribute to the bluesman by his son,\u00a0<strong>Eddie Taylor, Jr<\/strong>. followed by the\u00a0<strong>Jimmy Johnson Band<\/strong>\u00a0at 2:45 p.m.\u00a0<strong>The Como Mamas<\/strong>\u00a0will bring their deep soul-gospel sound to the Porch on\u00a0<strong>Sunday, June 11<\/strong>\u00a0at noon. The three friends from Como, Mississippi have been singing together since they were young girls at the Mt. Mariah Church. The stage will wrap up on the final day with\u00a0<strong>Wallace Coleman<\/strong>\u00a0at 4:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Preview Performance and Film Screenings<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the Chicago Blues Festival, during May and June, there will be several preview performances and film screenings at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and at Daley Plaza (50 West Washintion).\u00a0<strong>Nellie \u201cTiger\u201d Travis<\/strong>\u00a0performs on\u00a0<strong>Monday, May 8,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>The<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Mike Wheeler Band<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>Monday, May 15,<\/strong>\u00a0at noon in the Chicago Cultural Center\u2019s Randolph Square. \u00a0On\u00a0<strong>Monday, May 22,\u00a0<\/strong>at 6pm, there will be a special screening of\u00a0<strong><em>Willie Dixon and the New Generation of Chicago Blues<\/em><\/strong>, followed on Monday, June 5, at 6pm, with a special screening of\u00a0<strong><em>Sam Lay In Bluesland<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 both in the Chicago Cultural Center\u2019s Claudia Cassidy Theater. Multigenerational artists will create original music \u2013 inspired by the Blues \u2013 for a chance to perform at the Chicago Blues Festival.
