STATEMENT FROM JOE SHANAHAN AND SEAN MULRONEY ON DOUBLE DOOR\u00a0EVICTION<\/p>\n
Sean Mulroney and Joe Shanahan, co-owners of Double Door, learned this morning\u00a0that Double Door has been evicted from its longtime Wicker Park space after 23 years\u00a0in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
A legal battle\u2014dating back to November 2015\u2014between the Double Door owners and\u00a0their landlord Brian Strauss came to a close on the morning of Monday, February 6,\u00a0when Cooky County sheriff\u2019s police posted a \u201cNo Trespassing\u201d sign on the club\u2019s door\u00a0and a locksmith changed the venue\u2019s locks.\u00a0\u201cDouble Door has tendered January and February rent payments on three separate\u00a0occasions, all of which Strauss has refused to accept,\u201d Mulroney said. \u201cIn the interest of\u00a0protecting both employees and performers at Double Door, we attempted to craft a deal\u00a0to guarantee our residency through June of 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were negotiating in good faith as until 6:00 p.m. on Friday in my office,\u201d Double\u00a0Door attorney Cary G. Schiff said. \u201cWhile the negotiations did take a pause, there was\u00a0no good faith explanation for the Sheriff arriving first thing Monday morning. I can only\u00a0conclude that was the plan all along.\u201d\u00a0The deal would have forced Double Door to turn over its license, assets and intellectual\u00a0property, along with a substantial security deposit and a severely hiked monthly rent.\u00a0The negotiations, however, transpired while Strauss held full knowledge of the sheriff\u2019s\u00a0plans to evict Double Door.<\/p>\n
This hardly marks a conclusion of the Double Door proceedings, though\u2014Shanahan\u00a0and Mulroney are reserving their right to pursue a cross claim against Strauss for the\u00a0eviction proceeding. The duo will also continue to make headway on the venue\u2019s\u00a0relocation to the Logan Square.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is merely another chapter for Double Door\u2014it is not the end of its iconic presence\u00a0as a music venue and arts incubator in Chicago,\u201d Shanahan said. \u201cDouble Door will\u00a0continue to commit itself to protecting its staff and bands in its current location as long\u00a0as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
