Supported by The Chicago Community Trust, the Jazz on the Rooftop stage aims to showcase up-and-coming Chicago native jazz musicians alongside the notable regional and national touring acts that attract nearly 150,000 jazz fans. This year, the festival is pleased to create a new stage for NextGen jazz artists which will present Jazz Institute of Chicago\u2019s Jazz Links alumni: saxophonist\u00a0<strong>John Foster-Brooks<\/strong>, pianist\u00a0<strong>Alexis Lombre<\/strong>, vibraphonist\u00a0<strong>Joel Ross<\/strong>, saxophonist\u00a0<strong>Chris Weller<\/strong>\u00a0and pianist\u00a0<strong>Cole DeGenova<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Chicago Community Trust Rooftop Jazz performances start September 3rd with a showcase of \u201cYoung Jazz Lions\u201d featuring some of the most dedicated elementary and high school jazz bands including the<strong>\u00a0Lenart Regional Gifted and Harold Washington Elementary School Jazz Combos<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Jones College Prep Jazz Combo<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Whitney Young Magnet High School Jazz Combo<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Curie High School Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Pritzker High School Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong>Kenwood High School Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>. Performances run from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Rooftop performances continue Sunday September 4th, for the first time featuring a new showcase of four NextGen Jazz artists. Leading off is\u00a0<strong>Alexis Lombre Quintet<\/strong>, featuring Corey Wilkes (trumpet), Isaiah Collier (saxophone), Junius Paul (bass) and Xavier Breaker (drums) at 11:30 a.m. From an early age, Lombre has enveloped herself in programs sponsored by the\u00a0<strong>Jazz Institute of Chicago<\/strong>. Her Chicago Jazz Festival debut was made in 2013 when Lombre performed a solo rendition of the National Anthem opening the main stage for the final day of the 35th Annual run. As bandleader of\u00a0<strong>The Alexis Lombre Trio\/Quartet<\/strong>, she has also performed around Chicago in the city\u2019s \u201cMade in Chicago Jazz Series,\u201d Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Bucktown Art Festival\u2019s New Jazz Roots Stage, Hyde Park Jazz Society\u2019s Sundays at Room 43, the Trinity UCC Jazzapalooza Jazz Festival, the University of Chicago\u2019s David &amp; Reva Logan Center for the Arts\u2019 Third Tuesday Jazz Series and, in the \u201cCharles Heath Presents: Jazzin on the SouthSide\u201d series.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Sunday showcase continues at 12:50 p.m. with vibraphonist\u00a0<strong>Joel Ross\u00a0<\/strong>and his band\u00a0<strong>Good Vibes<\/strong>, with brother Joshua Ross on drums, Ben Tiberio on bass and Julius Tucker on piano. Ross has performed with artists including\u00a0<strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Louis Hayes<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Christian McBride<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Stefon Harris<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gerald Clayton<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra<\/strong>, among other notable acts. He has been selected twice as a\u00a0<strong>Thelonious Monk Institute National All-Star<\/strong>\u00a0and a<strong>YoungArts Jazz\u00a0<\/strong>finalist in 2013. Currently, Ross resides in New York City where he studies under the direction of Harris at the\u00a0<strong>New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music<\/strong>. Ross\u2019s group, Good Vibes, will feature\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Corren<\/strong>\u00a0on piano,\u00a0<strong>Benjamin Tiberio<\/strong>\u00a0on bass, and\u00a0<strong>Jalon Archie<\/strong>\u00a0on drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Chicago-based trio dedicated to rock energy and fearless exploratory improvisation, known by the name of\u00a0<strong>Hanging Hearts<\/strong>, will perform on the Rooftop stage at 2:10 p.m. Critics praise the group for \u201chammering the walls between genre,\u201d as their music bridges the gap between jazz, rock, and experimental music. The band features\u00a0<strong>Chris Weller<\/strong>\u00a0on tenor saxophone,\u00a0<strong>Cole DeGenova\u00a0<\/strong>on keyboards and\u00a0<strong>Devin Drobka\u00a0<\/strong>on drums. Weller and DeGenova grew up in Chicago, playing in notable local jazz and blues clubs by the age of 15. The trio was completed when the two met Drobka at<strong>\u00a0Berklee College of Music<\/strong>. Members of the group have performed around the world and shared the stage with\u00a0<strong>Joe Lovano<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jerry Bergonzi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Greg Osby<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tony Malaby<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tower of Power<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Lettuce<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kurt Elling<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Snarky Puppy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lupe Fiasco<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Greg Ward<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tim Daisy<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Dave Rempis<\/strong>, among others. Notable performances as a band include the\u00a0<strong>Jazzinec Festival<\/strong>in the Czech Republic and\u00a0<strong>N\u00e1dasdy Castle<\/strong>\u00a0in S\u00e1rv\u00e1r, Hungary. Currently, the band is working on a new record with\u00a0<strong>Dave King<\/strong>, drummer of\u00a0<strong>The Bad Plus<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tenor saxophonist, composer, and leader\u00a0<strong>John Foster-Brooks\u00a0<\/strong>closes the NextGenJazz portion at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. At just 24 years of age Foster-Brooks has been privileged enough to study with jazz legends including\u00a0<strong>Ari Brown<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Dayna Stephens<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Yosvany Terry<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Marcus Strickland<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Bobby Sanabria<\/strong>. Foster-Brooks has graced stages of notable music festivals including\u00a0<strong>Sacana Jazz Festival<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Santanna Arresi Jazz Festival<\/strong>\u00a0in Italy, and many more, including the Chicago Jazz Festival. In 2009, he debuted his first big-band,\u00a0<strong>\u201cFoster Meets Brooks Big Band,<\/strong>\u201d a 15-piece ensemble which he showcased in New York City in 2011.
