If I had to pick some brief / choice words and sentences to describe Chelsea Wolfe’s performance
at the Metro Chicago this past Tuesday: Volatile.
A burning intensity of desperate emotion- demanding attention to be heard! Pounding and unrelenting percussion throughout, courtesy of Jess Gowrie. Fuzz drenched and menacing guitars, courtesy of Chelsea and Bryan Tulao A challenging, deeply emotive performance from Chelsea showing true grit with gripping vocals constantly cloaked in darkness and dread. (Just the way I like my Gothic doom). Both cathartic and addictive playing and singing throughout, especially with the new material from “Hiss Spun”: Songs such as “Spun”, “16 Psyche” “Vex”, with Sara Taylor of Youth Code providing some extra punch and vocal, and of course “Scrape”. I mean Jesus…her new material is mesmerizing. Simply a beautiful and riveting performance from beginning to end.
Opener was Youth Code; consisting of Sara Taylor on vocal, and Ryan George providing programming
and occasional vocal. A raw, uncompromising and punishing industrial electronic duo fro LA. Way too short of a set, in my opinion. Come back and headline a show- sooner, rather than later!
